A specialist in internal and cardiovascular diseases said he estimates that 50 percent of citizens of the Kurdistan Region have high blood pressure.
Omer Surchi, a doctor in Rizgari hospital in Erbil, said a quarter of the Kurdistan Region's residents have so far been diagnosed with high blood pressure.
These patients do not know they have the disease until their health deteriorates and they visit hospital, explained the specialist.
The main reason for the disease is eating too much meat, salt and fat and not exercising enough, added Surchi.
The doctor advised residents to visit hospital for health checks and to seek treatment if they are found to have high blood pressure.
