Military forces enter Basra's Khour al-Zubair, Umm Qasr ports

Basra, 01 April 2008 (Voices of Iraq)

Military forces entered the ports of Khour al-Zubair and Umm Qasr in western Basra to provide protection and enhance security control there, an official source in Khour al-Zubair port said on Tuesday.

"An Iraqi army force entered the ports upon orders from Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to replace the facility protection department guards," the source, who did not want to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

Umm Qasr and Khour al-Zubair ports, 60 km and 40 km western Basra respectively, are the largest commercial ports in Iraq, receiving all imported goods and commodities.

Salah Khudair, the director of Basra ports, had accused agencies and clerics he did not name of controlling activities in the ports, attributing the delay in the rehabilitation of those two sea outlets to this "interference".
